“Twist and Shout” is a 1961 song written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (later credited as “Bert Russell”). It was initially recorded by American group The Top Notes, and released by their record label, Gamma Records, as a single in February 1961. It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the group’s only hit single.
The song was covered by The Beatles in 1963, for their debut album Please Please Me. The group’s version is considered one of their most iconic and energetic live performances. Their cover of the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, and number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
